2024 Poll Insights Part V: What Patients and Caregivers Care Most About in New Treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease

Welcome back to the final installment of our series on the national perception of Alzheimer’s disease, based on insights from the 2024 national poll conducted by FTP Insights and Accelerate Advocacy. In our previous posts, we provided an overview of the key findings, discussed why Alzheimer’s should be a national priority, explored the low awareness of current treatments, and highlighted the latest innovations focusing on vascular health. Today, we’ll delve into what patients and caregivers care most about in new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.

Restoring Cognitive Function

The poll revealed that treatments that can restore cognitive function are one of the top priorities for patients and caregivers. Reversing cognitive decline is seen as a critical goal, offering hope for regaining lost abilities and improving the overall quality of life for those affected by Alzheimer’s.

Prolonging Independence

Another highly valued attribute of Alzheimer’s treatments is their ability to prolong a patient’s independence. Voters prioritize treatments that help patients stay home longer and continue managing their day-to-day tasks. Maintaining independence is crucial for patients’ dignity and caregivers’ peace of mind.

Enhancing Quality of Life

Treatments that enhance the quality of life for Alzheimer’s patients are also highly valued. Voters expressed a strong preference for therapies that allow patients to live more normal lives, improve mood, decrease anxiety and agitation, and reduce the need for constant care from family members.

Accessibility and Affordability

Ensuring that treatments are accessible and affordable is another critical concern. Voters emphasized the importance of making new therapies available to all patients, regardless of their financial situation. This includes reducing costs and ensuring treatments are covered by insurance.

Call to Action

Understanding these priorities is essential for guiding future research and development in Alzheimer’s treatments. By focusing on what matters most to patients and caregivers, researchers and healthcare providers can develop therapies that genuinely meet the needs of those affected by this disease.

Conclusion

This post concludes our five-part series on the national perception of Alzheimer’s disease. As we continue to engage with the community and gather feedback, we will explore additional topics and insights in future posts.

The findings from the 2024 national poll provide valuable insights into what patients and caregivers care most about in new Alzheimer’s treatments. By prioritizing these attributes in research and development, we can work towards therapies that offer hope, improve quality of life, and support the independence of those affected by Alzheimer’s.
